Valkyrie Elysium is developed in collaboration between Square Enix and Soleil, and published by Square Enix. The game is an action role-playing game set in the world of Norse mythology. The game follows Nora, a valkyrie created to find and purify souls. This in turn helps an injured Odin who is trying to defeat Fenrir during Ragnarok. The game is part of the Valkyrie Profile series, which spans now a total of five games.

However, Valkyrie Elysium is the first non-handheld game in the series in over 15 years. While it is a spiritual successor to Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, it uses a new battle system. Instead of a turn-based one, Valkyrie Elysium employs an action-based battle system. The players assume the role of Nora, a valkyrie and lesser god created by the All-Father Odin. Her adventures take her to Midgard, where she has to seek souls to purify.
